A refusal of praise is a desire to be praised twice; for @preseance

[ The uncomfortable thing about Duplicity is how easy it made simply falling in line. Riza had plenty of experience with that, plenty of experience of pretending to be a good little cog in a machine designed to crush people into conformity. So that's what she was doing. Again. Being a good Dominant who looked after her Submissives, gave them proper instruction and care, tried to keep them as comfortable as she could in the circumstances... but she knew it wasn't necessarily easy for everyone.

Gene, she knew, was not one who had much innate desire for physical intimacy. She could respect that and wanted to help him maintain the bodily autonomy that was denied to so many others--the problem was that there were times where a good little cog has to help turn the gears. She needed to be seen to do something, at the very least so that she could seem to be one of the good arrival, someone who played along and wasn't going to cause trouble. There was a party, one of the many hedonistic displays the city was so fond of and she'd done her best to consult with Gene before volunteering the services of her Submissive for this particular entertainment.

She sits in a comfortable chair, her legs crossed--she's chosen slacks tucked into high leather boots, a blouse unbuttoned below the collar-bone, a pair of gloves. She works hard to project a certain aura here and so she must play her part. The room itself could be called cozy in its size, barely bigger than a walk-in closet with a pair of plush chairs at one end, a mirror on the door that might also be a window when the lights are low. The one thing that really makes it stand out is the till-covered hole in one wall, just at the perfect height if someone were to kneel or bend over next to it.

Through the wall there's a soft murmur of conversation, laughter. Her foot jumps a little in a nervous tattoo and she takes a sip from the flute of champagne resting next to her chair, looks across the small space towards Gene. ]

Last chance to back out if you aren't sure.

[ A small, weary smile. ]

Just say the word and I'll end the night.

There's also the supernatural, eldritch, and altogether disturbing homunculi who have a variety of horrifying supernatural powers.

Basically, girl has been through a lot of shit and she's faced down a variety of psychological and physical traumas through her life.

PERSONALITY.

Your character has a chance to undo a terrible mistake, but in doing so, there could be unintended consequences for everyone they know. Is it worth the risk? Or should the dead stay dead?
Yes. The answer to this one is one hundred percent yes. As a soldier in the Amestrian State Military, Riza participated in the conflict known as the Ishvalan Civil War. This was a civil conflict initiated in order to purposefully shed blood. This conflict only ended when the Amestrian State Military used State Alchemists and the military to essentially perpetrate a genocide against the Ishvalan people. State Alchemists are members of the military licensed as alchemists, those who are skilled in the science fo construction and deconstruction that gives almost supernatural powers, such as the ability to reshape matter or even transmute it into its base elements, i.e. extraction of hydrogen from water molecules.

Riza participated in the ending stage of the Ishvalan Civil War and personally shot and killed an undetermined number of people while acting as a sniper. She is only ever shown shooting other combatants, but it can be inferred that as a member of the military, she participated in the genocide of the Ishvalan people. While an exact number isn't given in the canon, it is likely that thousands, if not millions of people were killed.

Riza is consumed by a deep and abiding guilt about her own participation in this conflict. If she could do so, she would undo not just her participation, but the whole war itself, no matter the cost to herself personally. She has joined with her father's former student and fellow guilt-ridden war criminal Roy Mustang in a determined effort to overthrow the military junta that rules Amestris and return democratic rule in spite of the likelihood that they would be tried and possibly executed by any democratic government for their participation in the genocide. Riza lives a life consumed by guilt for her own actions and for the destruction wrought on the world by the research of her father in the field of Flame Alchemy.

If your character had the option to permanently lose the ability to feel certain negative emotions like fear or grief, or permanently forget certain memories, would they take it? What if they will never know that something has been taken from them? Does loss only matter if it's known what's missing?
No.

Could your character ever forgive themselves for something morally wrong that they've done? No matter how much time has passed? No matter how much penitence has been done? Is being sorry enough to be a good person?
No.

Your character has a secret they have been sworn to, but revealing this secret could save the lives of countless others. Is it worth breaking the promise to save others, or is betrayal never justifiable?

Has your character ever gotten joy out of hurting others, physically or mentally? If they have, does it scare them?
As far as can be seen in canon, Riza does not take any happiness in harming others. During her time fighting in Ishval, she was weary and laden with guilt. Even in her efforts to protect Roy Mustang and their mutual plot against the government, Riza is never shown to take joy in the suffering of others. The closest we see her come is when the homunculus, Lust, claims to have murdered Roy Mustang. She goes mad with grief and rage and attacks without a care for her safety, though there is no satisfaction in harming Lust--her attacks only set her back temporarily in any case.

Her lack of joy in the suffering of others can be seen in her philosophy regarding weapons. While others view firearms as tools meant only to kill, she views them as tools that can be used to protect those she cares for. Additionally, she has promised Roy Mustang that if he ever goes too far--if he ever tips over into unnecessary brutality and cruelty, she will stop him by any means necessary. This includes killing him. When Roy threatens to tip too far over the edge and torment a homunculus to death, she confronts him with her weapon in hand and reminds him of her promise.

Name: Riza Hawkeye
Door: RIGHT

Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Canon Point: Episode 19: "Death of the Undying"

Age: 25
Appearance: 1 2

History: History
Personality:

  • Guilt
  • Guilt defines Riza in a large way. Riza is racked with a deep sense of guilt and regret over the actions of her father and her own participation in the Ishvalan Civil War, where she participated in atrocities and reprisals against rebelling Ishvalan independence fighters. Her father, Berthold was an Alchemist who developed the famed Flame Alchemy which would become famous through Roy Mustang. Riza has grown to despise war and bloodshed, but still "dirties herself" as a soldier as a necessary evil in order to help Roy Mustang become the leader of Amestris in the hopes of creating a better world for future generations. While her father's Flame Alchemy is part of her guilt, the bulk comes from her own participation in war and the lives she has taken in the service of her country.

  • Obstinate
  • Or you could just call her stubborn. Riza is generally a flexible person able to adapt to changing circumstances. However, especially when it comes to Roy, her loyalty can turn into something more unpleasant. She refuses to bend, even in the most dire of circumstances (while bleeding to death, she encourages Roy to fight on, even if it means her death). Even the sacrifice of her life is seen as a acceptable, should the right situation arise. This can also manifest as her being extremely controlling. She likes to take charge of situations and feels most comfortable when she or someone she trusts is directing things. Especially in regards to Roy Mustang, she doesn't hesitate to dress him down, talk over him, or do what she thinks is in his best interest in the face of danger.

    • Calm/Taciturn
    • Riza has one hell of a poker face. She rarely, if ever, lets herself be seen as being overly emotional or affected by the things that happen around her. Part of this is a purposefully cultivated in order to make herself a useful and unflappable assistant to Colonel Roy Mustang. Another part is that she is simply a disciplined and unflappable type who is dedicated both to her cause and to her duties. This can also manifest as a callousness and ruthlessness towards those who stand in the path of her goals. While she is not indifferent to the suffering of others, she is capable of coolly compartmentalizing their well-being and health as secondary. Even if violence is distasteful, she views it as necessary for the success of bringing about a better world and has decided to willingly saddle herself with the shedding of further blood.

    • Idealistic
    • Riza is a dedicated follower of Roy Mustang and shares his hopes for a future for Amestris that can be free of prejudice, war, and bloodshed. While she keeps a tight lid on these beliefs around everyone but Roy, for the most part, it is the driving force behind her devotion and dedication Roy Mustang. Seeing first hand the death and destruction wrought by war and by alchemy, Riza is dedicated to bringing about a better future for Amestris and creating a better world for all those to come after her. This extends to Roy Mustang, the man she follows. She is willing to kill him for their shared ideals in the case that he ever goes too far. Roy understands and accepts this and even welcomes it. Like Riza, he has no desire to be a crazed dictator or unhinged murderer.

    • Loyal
    • Loyal to the point that this might well be considered a fault. Riza has dedicated herself to Roy Mustang and Roy Mustang's ideals and this is perhaps one of the only driving forces she has in her life. During the confrontation with Lust, when she believes that the Homunculus has killed the colonel, she falls into a deep, emotional despair and she, for a brief time, loses the will to live as it seems she would prefer to also be killed by Lust rather than continue to exist without Mustang. This is reciprocal--Riza Hawkeye is the woman who Roy Mustang unquestionably trusts with his life, even if he does foolish things that involve throwing himself into danger for her sake, even when her wish is for him to stay safely out of danger. This loyalty from Riza isn't blind, though. She is prepared to stop Mustang from violating his own code of ethics and is willing to kill him if he ever goes too far in his pursuit of power--even though this would undoubtedly result in her own death.
